- term used here to indicate the entire military organisation run by the Republic of Venice on different levels

- established in 1229, it was originally composed of 60 members, but its numbers were soon swelled by an additional 60 noblemen. To this number were added the members of other technical magistracies and the Council of Ten, so that by the early sixteenth century the number of senators had increased to around 200. During the modern period it assumed general jurisdiction in political, legislative, administrative and ecclesiastical sectors
