- the highest office in Venetian organisation, usually given to a noble in the city who had reached the culmination of his political career. Together with the position of Procurator of San Marco, this was the only office conferred for life. He was elected to the position by a commission made up of 41 members selected from the Grand Council ('Maggior Consiglio'). He presided over the sittings of both the Grand Council and the Senate

- gold coin minted in Venice from 1284 onwards, with the same weight and value as the Florentine 'fiorino'. The ducat, also called a 'zecchino', maintained its weight of 3.5 grams of almost 24 carat gold from its first minting to the fall of the Republic
