	bailo political-administrative position held by a Venetian patrician in several centres in the maritime dominion (such as Corfù). Not to be confused with the 'bailo' in Constantinople who instead functioned as an ambassador in the capital of the Turkish empire balia tax and administrative district in the Ionian islands brig type of low-sided Latin ship, used to serve ships of larger dimensions. It was furnished with two masts, shipped 200 to 300 tonnes, and could carry from 10 to 20 cannons when equipped for war
